Edmonton neighbourhood gets facelift

Last Updated: Sunday, August 16, 2009 | 4:56 PM MT

An Edmonton neighbourhood known for its drug and prostitution problems is getting a new look.

The area of 118 Avenue between 82 and 87 streets is undergoing upgrades, including curb extensions, better lighting, crossings for pedestrians and more trees.

On Saturday, the community celebrated the first phase of the construction.

Hundreds of residents, performers, musicians and vendors lined the street for the big day.

Coun. Tony Caterina said the idea to upgrade in the area dates back to 2004.

He said the changes in the area would improve life for residents.

"The best part about this is now it give residents around here the confidence to come out, and they've taken back their neighbourhoods," he said.

"It gives other people in the city a reason now to come and say, 'This is a great neighbourhood, great place to live, great place to raise my family,' and I think that will all compound itself and just get better and better as the years go by."

Reo Bone, who lives in the area, said it's important to focus on the good things happening in the neighbourhood.

"A lot of people who aren't in this neighbourhood don't know that this is going on today, so I think if word gets out that more things like this are happening … perception will change."

It's expected that all of the upgrades will be completed in four years.
